CMJ - Improvements
A number of improvements can be made to CMJ to address some of the existing issues with its
operation and to achieve the project objectives.
The key improvements resulting from the proposed scheme are:
-
Construction of new links between the Northwestern Motorway and the Northern Motorway
in both directions.
-
Construction of new links between the Northern Motorway and Grafton Gully in both
directions, so that access to and from the Port will be improved.
-
Providing two continuous through-lanes in each direction on the Southern/ Northern
Motorways, between Newmarket and Victoria Park viaducts, for traffic travelling straight
through the junction; eliminating the need to change lanes to exit the motorway.
-
Construction of additional lanes through the Khyber Pass to Gillies Ave section of the
motorway.
-
Rearrange the Nelson St off-ramp to allow traffic to exit from the left-hand side.
-
Arrange on-ramps and off-ramps so that there is improved distance between them to
reduce the amount of 'weaving' between lanes.
-
Establish some 'lay-by' areas beside traffic lanes so that breakdowns, crashes and
other incidents can be attended to without interrupting traffic flow.
-
Provide better and more consistent signage and road markings.
The challenge for this project is to put these improvements in place while making the most
efficient use of available space, minimising impacts on neighbours and keeping the
traffic flowing.
