Hobson St on-ramp to the Southern Motorway

The existing Hobson Street on-ramp to the Southern Motorway merges with the existing two southbound lanes. As part of the new CMJ scheme, traffic from Hobson Street will join in a new additional dedicated lane on the Southern Motorway extending past the Symonds St bridge.

In March 2004, the Mangere pre-cast yard was established to produce pre-cast concrete beams, panels and safety barriers for the Central Motorway Junction (CMJ) Stage 2 project.

In December 2004 an additional lane, from the Hobson Street on-ramp along the Southern Motorway southbound to Symonds Street on-ramp was opened. Provision of another lane in this restricted space means that traffic heading south from the North Shore on the Southern Motorway must travel closer to the existing Karangahape Road bridge piers. To protect these piers from accidental damage by vehicles, substantial concrete panels have been produced and installed.

Realignment of Retaining Wall 2G

Work began in mid 2004 on realigning an existing retaining wall on the Port to Northwestern Motorway link under the Upper Queen Street Bridge. The realignment is to provide better sight stopping distances on the curve and to accommodate changes to the Port to Northwestern (SH16) carriageway. Realigning the the existing retaining wall wall provided a significant challenge. The existing Port to Northwestern Motorway link adjacent to the retaining wall meant the access was difficult and the works were further complicated by the close proximity of the Southern Motorway (SH1) northbound carriageway above the wall. The solution has been to build the wall in stages from the top down. A section about 1.5 meters deep was cut down and a bench formed. Soil nails were then drilled into the exposed face and grouted into place. Mesh was placed and shortcreted to provide stability before the next bench was excavated below.

This sequence was repeated several times until the newly aligned wall was cut down to the level of the existing wall.

The exposed faces of the two retaining walls on the Northwestern to Northern Motorway link have decorative panels that reflect a sense of place and history within Auckland. Urban design has been undertaken, in conjunction with local iwi, to enhance the motorway environment.

The wall facing the Northwestern Motorway will have a wave motif recalling the streams teeming with eels that once flowed there. The wall to the north of the Beresford Street Viaduct in Freemans Bay will have a stylized pohutukawa flower and leaf pattern. On completion of construction and landscaping, pohutukawa trees will be the dominant species among the native flora planted in that area.

In addition to decorative panels on retaining walls, there is now urban design enhancement to an existing bridge. Edge barriers on the Newton No.1 bridge, which carries SH1 traffic northbound have been upgraded and have a kowhaiwhai pattern which references traditional Maori wood carving forms and patterns that represent the containment and communication of knowledge and power.

The barriers on new bridges have on their outside face a ta moko pattern alternating with karaka tree leaves and berries. This design reflects the significance to the iwi who lived in the area of a sacred grove of karaka trees which once stood at the heart of the CMJ area in Newton Gully.

The karaka leaves and berries and the ta moko design may remind people who enter this area that for more than a thousand years this area has been appreciated for its fertile soils, abundant kai moana and strategic position.

Port to Northwestern Motorway

The existing carriageway has been realigned after completion of retaining wall 2G. August 2005.

Northern Tie-in

600metres of retaining walls are under construction in the area of SH1 southbound between Cook Street off-ramp and Hobson Street on-ramp. Four of these retaining walls and the two walls for the 200m long cross-over bridge are required to enable the excavation of the Southern Motorway southbound. Four more retaining walls are required in the embankment beside Union Street, to provide the new exit lane.

SH1 southbound traffic was shifted onto a temporary alignment behind the new walls in November 2005, while the existing southbound carriageway was excavated and a new carriageway constructed 4m lower than previously. The lowered carriageway provides headroom for the cross-over bridge which will carry traffic to the Port and Northwestern links. Traffic was shifted onto the new southbound alignment, under the bridge in September 2006.

As well as the retaining walls being constructed, three existing structures (Wellington Street Bridge, SH1 to Nelson Street off-ramp and Hobson street on-ramp to the Northwestern Motorway) need to be underpinned to allow the Southern Motorway southbound to be reduced in level directly adjacent to the existing foundations.

Southern Motorway southbound, Structure 6 west wall piles June 2004. This is one of two walls to be constructed as part of the cross-over bridge which will carry traffic from the North Shore eastbound to Grafton Gully and the Port and westbound to the Northwestern Motorway.
Southern Motorway, southbound Structure 6 west wall piers July 05. A temporary SH1 southbound lane was constructed to the left of this wall and traffic switched on to it in late 2005. The carriageway to the right was then excavated, lowered and reconstructed.
Northen-Tie-in: Piled retaining wall N1 Northern-Tie-in:  Piled retaining Wall N1.  Piling and the capping beam in the embankment beside SH1 southbound (north of Wellington Street) was completed in mid 2005.  In November 2005 excavation to expose the piles began and as each layer was exposed the gaps between the piles were shotcreted.
