arrow CMJ - STAGE 2

A design and construct contract has been awarded to "Complete Joint Venture" (CJV) comprising Fletcher Construction and Leighton Contractors (one of Australia's largest construction companies) with design work subcontracted to consultants Beca Carter Hollings and Ferner.

Overall project budget for the work is in the order of $140M for the 38 (October 2003 - November 2006) month contract.

Complete JV began construction work in January 2004 and the contract is currently expected to be completed late in 2006.

Extension of work to CMJ Stage 2 contract

The Central Motorway Junction Stage 2 project has been extended to include an upgrade of the Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound between Cook Street off-ramp and Hobson Street on-ramp.

This additional work on the Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound, known as the Northern Tie-in, provides the following benefits:

  • Construction of the northern extent of the new Northern to Port and Northwestern Motorway links in a manner that allows these new links to exit from the Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound on the left hand side. This exit will occur after the Cook Street off-ramp but before the Wellington Street bridge.
  • The new links will exit from the Southern Motorway in a single lane which will then widen to 2 lanes. This will allow slower traffic such as trucks bound for the Port to use the left hand lane and avoid delaying other vehicles.
  • Realignment and lowering of the Southern Motorway (SH1) southbound between Cook Street off-ramp and Hobson Street on-ramp to allow the new links to the Port and Northwestern Motorway to pass over the top of the Southern Motorway on a new bridge. This design allows use of a safer left hand side exit for the new links, while still allowing them to join up with their proposed alignments on the right hand side of the Southern Motorway in the area beneath Karangahape Road.
  • Maintaining the existing Cook Street off-ramp to the CBD.

As a result of this additional work, the construction programme for the CMJ Stage 2 project will be extended to the end of 2006.

Northern Tie-in - October 2006

Construction of the Northern Tie-in began in January 2005.

Initial work included shifting the north and southbound carriageways of the Southern Motorway (SH1) onto temporary alignments between Cook Street off-ramp and Hopetoun Street bridge. Construction of new retaining walls, a bridge structure and modifications to existing structures on the southbound side of the motorway were completed in September 2006 with only some landscaping to finish.

Southbound traffic was directed back onto its permanent alignment in early September.  The new permanent SH1 southbound alignment is lower than the original alignment and passes through the new Structure 6 bridge/tunnel.  The new northern links from North to Port and North to Northwestern Motorway will cross over Structure 6.

Once the traffic switch to the new permanent SH1 southbound alignment was completed, work started immediately in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes of SH1.  Works were also undertaken on the merge of the new Northwestern Motorway and Port links.  The new Northern Motorway and Port to North links are scheduled to open in December 2006.

Extension of work to CMJ Stage 2 Contract - February 2005

This standalone project called Newton Road to Western Springs Auxiliary Lane has been added to the CMJ Stage 2 Project in the interests of expediency and co-ordination of Traffic Management.

Transit's decision to include it will mean minimum disruption to motorists and the adjoining residents as the project will be integrated into the CMJ Stage 2 works. It comprises the design and construction of a fourth lane from Newton Road on-ramp to the Northwestern Motorway westbound (heading towards St Lukes).

Construction of an extra lane to St Lukes will provide additional capacity for westbound traffic leaving the CBD and ease congestion at the evening peak.

Construction on this part of the project commenced mid 2005 and is scheduled for completion late 2006.
